MIGRANT EMPLOYMENT

The African-Australians are doing it tough in the job front, despite the ever-increasing evidence of a healthy economy and a boom in the mainstream labour market in Australia.

Consequently, the new arrivals have devised some creative and effective solutions to cope with the phenomenon of unemployment (and underemployment). They have, in fact, turned to menial jobs and self-employment just to keep the body and soul together.

But now, the Migrant Employment Consultancy Service (MECS) has come to the rescue. MECS is a flexible, individualized job search support and mentoring program run by the English Language Service (ELS) at Adelaide Institute of TAFE in South Australia.

MECS particularly targets the recently arrived skilled migrants who cannot access social security benefits and need to find work urgently.

And African migrants and refugees are delighted; and are making full use of the program
