AFRICAN FAMILY IN DIASPORA

African families live in a cycle of crisis with a range of complex issues that are becoming increasingly difficult to resolve during the early years of migration.

Now, a new model of service provision targeting the new arrivals in the Enfield area of South Australia is about to address the nagging problem of African disadvantage; giving more opportunities for young families in their hours of need.

And the choice of this area is timely. It is an area of great need, economically depressed - almost Dickensian!

In fact, the poor area of Enfield, where most of the newly arrived African migrants and refugees live, has been identified as one of the most disadvantaged areas in South Australia, with a large number of single parents, high rate of unemployment, coupled with the prevalence of low income families.

Meanwhile, Café Enfield, a family friendly centre, has come to the rescue. It is spearheading the move to set up African playgroups, along with health and family programs to meet the needs of families in the emerging communities.
