Illegal Immigrants

About 50,000 people are working in Australia illegally, according to the immigration authorities. But the business community, apparently, welcomes their work ethics.

The illegal workers, and those who overstay their visas, are being discovered in hostels, hotels, cafes and restaurants, agriculture, construction, and personal services.

Some are working in the health care facilities where labour is in short supply.

Multiculturalism in Australia

The Australians appear to have given an overwhelming support for multiculturalism despite the recent beachside race riots in Sydney.

Most Aussies still enjoy the fruits of multiculturalism and are, therefore, tolerant of racial and ethnic differences, according the Australian newspaper report.

The Newspoll survey, just released, shows quite clearly that 70 percent of the population still support the idea of multiculturalism – down from a high of 78 percent recorded in 1997.

Thus, if there is prejudice in the great Land of Oz, there is also tolerance.

The Threat of Race War

Today, the men and women of the Australian Police Force are in real fear of a new wave of racial violence on the beaches of Sydney as the rival ethnic gangs prepare for battle. An extra 500 officers have been called in to keep the peace.

Meanwhile, the climate of fear and uncertainty hovers over all dark skinned Australians; including the so-called “People of Middle Eastern appearance”.

Indeed, there is fear and loathing in the land of the long hot summer.

The Good Woman of Calabar

There once was a good woman from Calabar
Who was ceremoniously called to the Bar
Inspired by the spirit of the Law
She set upon writing the city’s first bylaw
This led to the closure of the notorious Paradise Street bar.

On the Jobless Migrants

Unemployment is a significant problem for new migrants to Australia. The recent issue of the Australian Financial Review reports that migrants from North Africa and the Middle East have experienced unemployment rate of 12 per cent at a time when the national average rate is a little over 5 per cent.

Thus, the phenomenon of unemployment is not only a major disadvantage for migrants, it is the first basic step towards alienation and resentment, according to the report.

Yet, there are other implications. The new migrants are feeling the pinch of Unemployment which is psychologically damaging because it prolongs the process of adaptation and adjustment.
